Why do I need to fast before my procedure?
Fasting before your procedure is required to avoid risking food or fluid from your stomach entering into your lungs.
Are there any risks involved with anaesthesia?
Complications are very uncommon when anaesthesia is administered by a specialist anaesthetist.
Minor complications include bruising, pain or injury at the injection site, fatigue, altered mental state, headaches, sore throat or damage to teeth or the mouth.
There are also some very rare, but serious complications including severe allergic or sensitivity reactions.
What can I expect after my procedure?
After your procedure you will be monitored by your anaesthetist and nurses. You will feel drowsy for a little while after you wake up. Once you are fully awake, you will be transferred to a waiting area before returning home. You will need someone to pick you up from the hospital and take you home. Ensure someone is able to stay with you for a period of 24 hours in the event of you feeling unwell. This is for your own safety as the drugs given for your sedation can be unpredictable and may affect your judgement.
What are some common side effects that may occur after my procedure?
You may experience a sore or dry throat after your procedure. You may experience some dizziness, blurred vision or short-term memory loss. Nausea and vomiting are uncommon. If you do experience any worrying side-effects you should contact us as soon as possible and ask to speak with the practice nurse.
If you have had a colonoscopy, some abdominal discomfort and bloating is common after your procedure. This is due to the air passed into the bowel by the instrument which allows a better view of the lining of your intestine. If you start to experience abdominal pain (other than wind) that becomes severe, please contact the practice nurse.
How soon after my procedure can I go back to work?
If the procedure was a day procedure, you may go back to work or carry on with your normal activities the day after so long as the effects of the anaesthetic have worn off and you feel relatively comfortable.
